Preparing a Diaper Bag

Packing a diaper bag can be very overwhelming. Especially being a first time parent you just don’t know what you are going to come across out there with your new baby. Here are 10 diaper bag essentials that I thought were necessary to have. Pack these and you will not be left stranded out in the world with your new baby.

1. Lots and Lots of diapers. Try to forecast in your mind how long you will be gone and pack one diaper for each hour of your trip. So if you are going to be gone for a short trip to the mall and you know that normally takes you 2-3 hours I would pack 3 diapers just to be on the safe side.

2. One package of wipes. You don’t want to have to use the provided wipes, If they even do that, in the store or worse off be caught without any wipes. Bring a box of these along to clean your little one’s bottom.

3. Changing pad that folds down. Even though they are included in diaper bags most of the time you still need to make sure it is there and is clean.

4. Diaper Rash Ointment. The last thing you need is your baby to get diaper rash while you are out on a trip and then you have an unhappy baby. Let’s avoid that and bring this ointment along.

5. Extra clothes and 2 Burp cloths. Babies burp up all the time so you need extra burp clothes. Babies also sometimes make messes that come out the front and also the bottom so it is a good idea to have extra clothes around if the mess makes it pass the bib or the diaper.

6. Pack a receiving blanket in case the meteorologist isn’t right and the temperature changes on you. The last thing you want is a chilled baby.

7. Baby Bottle. If you are breast feeding them make sure the milk is fresh. If you are using formula try out the single use packets of formula. They work great for short trips.

8. Toys are a must and do wonders for a crabby kid.

9. If you baby is attached to a certain type of blanket it’s a good idea to bring one of those along to give them a familiar environment.

10. Bring along some big plastic bags to put soiled clothes in and/or dirty diapers.

Contact information is another good thing to have in your bag. A simple business card will work fine. Having a card that has all of your pediatrician’s numbers on it and any other emergency numbers is a good idea also.

Being prepared with all these things in your diaper bag will help to give you some security knowing that you are as prepared as you could be for certain situations.

All these steps seem like a lot to do for just one simple bag. You don’t know it yet but you and this simple bag are going to be spending quite some time together. You best be prepared.
