How do you Define Parenting?
Parenting is the foundation of a family. It quite literally defines the family unit. Families that have strong cohesion and support often had a very strong background in parenting. An often misconception is that parenting begins at childbirth. This however is not true; it begins at the mere thought of raising a child.
Parenting is the lifelong commitment of raising a child into a fully functioning adult. However, just because a child was raised into adulthood does not mean that the task of being a parent ends. The job description does not change but the tasks required are. Instead of teaching them how to tie their shoes you will be assisting them in learning everything that being an adult requires. The main focus of the job is raising a child that will be physically, emotionally, and mentally capable of handling themselves in society.
As children grow the parents’ role often changes with them. An example would be that an infant requires feeding, clothing, and cleaning where as a teenager will require the ability to perform these essential tasks. They will ultimately be able to take care of the basic day to day affairs but will need more attention in other areas such as discipline, education, and advice.
A child must grow to be independent, outgoing, and motivated. These ideals can be instilled into a child with proper teaching. The difference in this is that although the parents’ role will carry the most weight in the child’s developing ideas the addition of siblings tends to change the social construct of the entire family. Children learn from all members of the family through their interactions with one another. In any family the trend seems to suggest that the older siblings take on the role of teaching the younger ones how to perform the average day to day tasks, whether it is intentional or not, and the more complicated tasks are left to the parents. Once parents recognize this behavior change their role then changes to teach the older one to lead a good example for the other one to follow, which they invariably will.
Raising a child takes a lot of time, money, and energy. It is not a task that should be taken lightly. Proper preparation should be taken before even considering conceiving. Certain living conditions must be met to provide a healthy environment that promotes learning and development. However, while rearing a child possibly one of the greatest resources that one should have in abundance would be time. The more time that is spent with them will create a closer bond between parent and child and will also be one of the greatest rewards of being a parent.
